Single vision lenses

One viewing distance. Lenses chosen around your everyday needs.

What are single vision lenses?

Single vision lenses provide one prescription across the lens, rather than the changing powers found in a varifocal. They can correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism, or be prescribed for a specific working distance such as reading. The prescription describes your optical correction; the lens design, material and fitting determine how that correction is delivered in your chosen glasses. An eye examination and a discussion of your routine help establish what you need.

Distance, reading and screen work

Looking across a room, reading a book and using a desktop monitor involve different distances. A single vision prescription may be intended for general distance use, close work or a particular intermediate distance. Reading glasses are not automatically the right choice for a screen positioned farther away. Tell our team where your screen sits, how long you work at it and which other tasks matter. We can explain whether one prescription suits the task or whether a different lens category should be considered.

ZEISS ClearView

ZEISS ClearView is a single vision design positioned as a straightforward option with limited customisation. ZEISS describes it as providing clear vision through more of the lens than the conventional single vision designs used in its comparison. The range aims to combine optical performance with a thin, flatter appearance. This is a manufacturer design description, not a guarantee of identical results for every wearer. Your prescription, lens material, frame size and fitting all influence the finished glasses.

ZEISS SmartLife single vision

ZEISS SmartLife single vision lenses are designed with connected, on-the-move lifestyles in mind. ZEISS describes a design approach that considers viewing directions, age and how people move their eyes and heads between everyday tasks. The range offers more personalisation than a basic single vision design. It remains a single vision lens: considering different viewing situations does not turn it into a varifocal or provide a separate reading addition. The prescription still needs to suit the intended use.

Other ZEISS design choices

The current ZEISS single vision portfolio also presents ClearMind, DriveSafe and SmartLife Young options, alongside ClearView and SmartLife. These are different manufacturer designs rather than interchangeable names for the same lens. A specialised design should be considered in relation to your visual needs, not selected solely by its name. Our team can discuss which options are appropriate and confirm the products and combinations available for your prescription. The published ZEISS range is not a list of guaranteed stock at i2i.

Materials, thickness and frame choice

Single vision lenses are offered in different materials and refractive indices. A higher-index material can help reduce thickness for some prescriptions, but frame size and shape also make a substantial difference. A large frame can require a larger lens blank and affect the thickness of the finished lens. Weight, optical properties and the way the frame holds the lens deserve consideration alongside appearance. We will explain the practical choices rather than assuming the highest index is always the best option.

UV protection and lens finishes

ZEISS states that its single vision lenses offer UV protection up to 400 nm, including clear spectacle lenses. UV protection is a separate property from a visible sun tint. Coating options can reduce surface reflections and help with cleaning, while prescription sun and light-reactive options offer different ways to manage changing light. The exact features depend on the selected lens and finish. Confirm the specification with our dispensing team, especially if you need a particular combination of material, coating and tint.

Personalised fitting at i2i

For every pair of glasses purchased, we measure your pupillary distance, fitting heights and other key measurements using our state-of-the-art ZEISS VISUFIT dispensing technology. These measurements help position your lenses in relation to your eyes and the frame you will actually wear. Our team adjusts the frame and checks the finished glasses on you; digital measurements support, rather than replace, that professional judgement. VISUFIT measurement is free at i2i Optometrists, Howard Street.
