Scottish design. Independent spirit.
Danielle Rattray
Eyewear at i2i Optometrists, Glasgow
Danielle Rattray is an independent Scottish eyewear designer whose background spans graphics, fashion and branding. A graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, she remains based near her hometown in north east Scotland.
Rattray developed her own eyewear language while working with longstanding design and business partner Scott Lewis. After earlier collaborations on other labels, the first Danielle Rattray collection launched in 2020.
The eyewear is designed in Scotland and handmade in the Rhône Alpes region of France. Rattray works with manufacturers, concentrating on proportion, balance and finishing. Compact fitting dimensions are a deliberate part of the approach, giving bold shapes a more considered scale. Colour is used selectively, with combinations that can sharpen an outline, soften a strong front or add depth to translucent materials.
Music is a recurring point of reference, with punk and the style of performers such as Patti Smith and Blondie informing the designer's sensibility. Strong brows, rounded forms and sculptural profiles create their character through silhouette and colour.
