Dior
Eyewear at i2i Optometrists, Glasgow
Dior's eyewear belongs to a Parisian fashion house whose identity was transformed by Christian Dior's couture collection in 1947. The relationship between structure and decoration remains important to its accessories. In spectacles and sunglasses, that relationship is translated into sculpted fronts, distinctive temples and details drawn from the house's visual vocabulary, rather than a single permanent frame shape.
Since January 2021, Dior has partnered with Thélios for the creation, manufacture and worldwide distribution of its eyewear. Designs originate in the Dior studios in Paris before being realised in the specialist workshops at Longarone in Italy.
Dior frames explore both acetate and metal, from substantial silhouettes to lighter optical constructions. House signatures can become functional design elements: initials, patterned surfaces and carefully shaped hinges give identity to bridges and temples. References such as Dior Oblique and the CD emblem connect eyewear with leather goods, clothing and other accessories.
Designs such as DiorBlackSuit demonstrate how tailoring references can be translated into a frame's architecture.
