Icons with enduring character.
Ray-Ban
Eyewear at i2i Optometrists, Glasgow
Ray-Ban began in 1937, developing sunglasses for practical use before its frames became enduring style icons. Its early history is associated with crystal lenses designed to reduce glare for US pilots. The Aviator emerged from that aviation context, followed by the Wayfarer in the 1950s. With its moulded form and strong outline, the latter offered a distinctive alternative to slim metal frames. Both remain central to the brand’s identity.
The Original Wayfarer Classic is one of Ray-Ban’s most recognisable designs. The enduring design has been reinterpreted in many colours and lens combinations while retaining its recognisable character.
Ray-Ban’s wider collection includes familiar forms such as Clubmaster and Round, alongside newer designs and prescription eyewear. This breadth reflects a brand that continually revisits its archive while reaching new audiences. Frames have appeared across many eras of popular culture, becoming part of a visual vocabulary beyond eyewear itself. The company’s heritage is visible in these designs, but each style brings its own proportions and materials.
