Cutler and Gross

Eyewear at i2i Optometrists, Glasgow

Cutler and Gross was founded in 1969 by opticians Graham Cutler and Tony Gross. Their professional backgrounds shaped a vision of eyewear that joined optical expertise with an independent fashion sensibility. In 1971 they opened their Knightsbridge shop, creating a destination where customers could encounter frames as considered design objects rather than anonymous necessities. That early mix of technical knowledge and creative confidence remains central to the house’s identity.

The brand is associated with bold proportions, distinctive acetates and silhouettes that often reinterpret familiar shapes. Rather than following a single visual formula, collections move between classic references and more adventurous details. Colour, texture and carefully resolved lines help give each design a recognisable presence.

Cutler and Gross’s optical heritage informs its attention to how frames are made and worn. The house has built its reputation around design and craftsmanship, with production and finishing treated as meaningful parts of the object. Its work draws on a long relationship between British style and eyewear, while collections are developed for an international audience.
