For patients in Glasgow, Scotland’s NHS community eye examination is free if you usually live in the UK, are a refugee or asylum seeker, or are an overseas visitor who meets applicable eligibility rules. This is Scotland’s arrangement; England has different NHS sight-test eligibility, so English criteria should not determine entitlement here. The examination checks eye health as well as sight and may identify signs of other health problems. It does not guarantee detection of every condition or replace other healthcare.

Most people should usually have their eyes checked every two years. Children and older people may need more frequent appointments, and some medical conditions call for closer review. The optometrist will advise when a further clinical appointment is needed; this individual advice differs from the usual routine interval. An optometrist may arrange a free supplementary NHS examination between routine examinations when clinically needed, including for an urgent eye problem or closer monitoring. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you are worried about your eyes or vision: contact a community optometrist for advice.

An NHS-funded examination does not mean glasses or contact lenses are automatically free. NHS optical vouchers can help with their cost for eligible people, under separate rules. Specific overseas visitor circumstances and help with optical costs should be checked against current guidance. A local independent practice can explain the examination and discuss next steps, but eligibility, findings and follow-up depend on individual circumstances and clinical judgement. Ask the practice directly if unsure whether you qualify.
