Maui Jim
Eyewear at i2i Optometrists, Glasgow
Maui Jim grew from a sunglasses business on Ka'anapali Beach in Lahaina, Maui, during the 1980s. Its Hawaiian origins shaped a practical ambition: to manage intense sunlight and reflected glare without losing the colours of the surrounding landscape. What began with seven styles developed into an recognised eyewear brand.
Polarisation sits at the centre of that identity. Maui Jim developed its PolarizedPlus lens approach and subsequently added colour enhancement, creating PolarizedPlus2. The technology is designed to reduce glare while retaining a rich view of the environment.
The frames support a broad interpretation of outdoor life. Sportier wraparound designs sit alongside familiar pilots, rounded shapes and more substantial everyday silhouettes. Instead, its continuity comes from combining sun protection with a recognisable interest in colour, coverage and practical wearability.
In 2022, Maui Jim joined Kering Eyewear, linking its specialist lens heritage with a wider luxury eyewear group. Hawaii nevertheless remains the central reference in the brand's narrative and naming. From beach beginnings to a global business, that focus connects Maui Jim's history with its direction.
